What is platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a solution created from a small volume of your own blood. Your blood is composed of solids, including platelets and red and white blood cells, suspended in a liquid, called plasma. Platelets promote blood clotting and also contain important growth factors that activate cellular turnover.

The first step in creating PRP is to draw a small amount of your blood, which is then placed in a centrifuge. Spinning the sample at a high rate of speed causes the solids to separate from the plasma. The end result is a concentrated solution of platelets and plasma that can promote healing and cellular renewal.

How is PRP used in aesthetic treatments?

The primary cause of facial lines, wrinkles, and folds is the loss of collagen as you move through the aging process. Without that thick layer of padding, your skin begins to sag, and the visible signs of aging become more apparent. Microneedling with PRP helps reverse those effects.

Microneedling works by using a special device to create hundreds of micro-punctures in your skin. Your body responds with a natural healing action, increasing collagen production. Microneedling with PRP improves the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scarring
  • Stretch marks
  • Sun or age spots
  • Large pores
  • Loose skin

Each of the channels created during microneedling leads to the deeper layers of skin. Applying PRP to your skin after microneedling delivers the solution to the tissue layer where it is most effective. The combination of microneedling and PRP is often referred to as a vampire facial.

Can PRP help treat hair loss?

A growing body of evidence suggests that platelet-rich plasma stimulates natural hair growth, reversing the effects of hair loss. Even better, the process is minimally invasive and carries a very low risk of side effects.

Once your blood is drawn and processed, Dr. Brennan administers a series of shallow injections in the areas of your scalp where hair growth is desired. The platelet-rich plasma increases blood flow to the treatment area, giving your hair follicles the jump start needed to initiate new hair growth.

PRP therapy isn’t right for everyone, and Dr. Brennan discusses the full range of treatment options during your consultation. In many cases, however, PRP therapy delivers impressive results with very little risk of adverse effects. Book an appointment online or by phone today to learn more.
