Beautiful, proportionate, shapely breasts can not only make a woman look more curvaceous and sculpted, but they can also help her feel more attractive and confident. Whether a patient is hoping to lift a drooping bust line droop or to subtly or dramatically increase her cup size breast surgery can create an amazing result.  This procedure is perfect for woman who want to enhance their original size, or for patients that have saggy breasts and would like to add volume as well as perkiness.  This procedure is also great for woman after nursing.  Breast implants are extremely safe.  Breast implants will not cause disease or interfere with any diagnosis of breast disease nor affect nursing.  There are two types of FDA approved implants.  Both are silicone shells.  One is inflatable with salt water (Saline Implants) and the other is prefilled with silicone gel (Silicone Implants).  Breast Implant patients must make four decisions prior to surgery; Incision site (arm pit, areola, breast crease, umbilical).  Breast Surgery is relatively simple, very safe and is performed under light anesthesia as an outpatient surgery.  The day after surgery the patient can resume all normal activity, personal hygiene, diet, and lifestyle.

  1. Any implant inserted into the body; chin, hip, breast, etc, causes the body to, by nature, develops a protective scar tissue barrier surrounding the implant.  This scar tissue is called a capsule.  The capsule usually remains thin and soft.  And a breast implant is normally undetectable.  For unknown reasons the capsule may, at anytime and beyond anyone’s control, become thick.  This could happen in 3 months, 8 years, only one side, but never.  Patients must understand that it is beyond the surgeons control if this happens.  If this happens the breast can feel hard, be tender, or change shape including surface rippling.  The solution for this condition is a surgical procedure which opens the capsule (capsulotomy) to give the implant a bigger “house” to live in, or by removing the capsule (capsulectomy).  Patients must realize that capsules may reoccur once again in the future.

  2. Breast implants may also leak.  If the implant is a saline inflatable implant the implant will over time completely deflate which requires a reinsertion of a new implant.  This will not cause harm to a patient.  The new implant may again leak anytime in the future requiring replacement.  If a patient has silicone implants that leak, the silicone is usually retained in the capsule.  It is unusual for the silicone to leak outside of the capsule, but this may occur.  Leaking implants are relatively rare and correctable.

  3. Breast implants require incisions; any incisions may result in a visible scar.  The patient must be aware when making the decision as to the site of the incision.

  4. A minor issue in breast implant surgery is the location- under or over the muscle.  If you feel your own breasts and make a chest muscle you will see by nature your breast is over, not under the muscle, if an implant is place under the muscle it may cause certain deformities at rest and especially with muscle contracture.  (Insert pg. under the muscle 130, 131,132, 133) These patients also have “under muscle” deformity that has significantly improved by converting the implant from under to over the muscle.  Patients desiring breast surgery must answer four question:

    • Incision placement
    • Type of implant (saline vs. silicone)
    • Size of implant
    • Position ( under vs. over the muscle)

  5. Patients must understand the pros and cons; know the upside and downside and must except the responsibility for the outcome.
