At times, women develop extremely large breasts. This can occur even during adolescence, which results in a condition known as virginal hypertrophy of the breast, but can also occur in the late teens or twenties.
Patients who have large breasts have a variety of symptoms that are all related to the excessive weight of the breast. In years past, a breast reduction was a very complex and formidable procedure which was fraud with hazard including loss and alteration of sensation to the nipple and areola. The modern technique for breast reduction is tumescent liposuction. If we examine the breast microscopically, we see that the vast majority of tissue is fatty tissue, and as a result these patients are ideal candidates for breast reduction, using liposuction techniques through very tiny incisions and it eliminates the extensive incisions that were required in the classical method of breast reduction.
Breast reductions are performed at Newport Beach Center for Surgery, under a very light general anesthesia. The breast is filled with a tumescent fluid, similar to what is performed on liposuction patients, and the fatty tissue is then removed through very tiny incisions to accomplish significant breast reduction without tell tale signs.
Most patients simply require breast reductions and are extremely pleased with the results. The symptoms that they have that are related to the excessive weight of the breast and the restriction of physical activities due to the size of the breasts are completely eliminated. On occasion by significantly reduction the size of the breast, there is also a relaxation or drooping or what we call ptosis of the breast, and patients are advised of the possibility of this condition and if it occurs, then they have the option of having a Mastopexy procedure performed, which is described in the previous section of this website.
On completion of the breast reduction, a compression support dressing is applied and the patient is transferred to the recovery room, where a relatively short recovery is performed and the patient is then discharged to the responsibility of an adult caretaker. The patient has minimal discomfort, no pain, and is able to resume normal activities, even the day of the surgery. The following morning the patient is seen in the office where the dressings are removed. The breasts are checked and the patient is advised to wear a support compression sports type bra, and to resume all her normal activities, including getting into a shower and resuming her normal personal hygiene, even the day after surgery, engaging in all types of normal activity, regular diet and regular sleep habits. These patients have very rapid recovery and are truly amazing in the significant, beneficial result of what is in today’s world, a very minor surgical procedure.
